Godly Goals

How to Set Godly Goals

I have a feeling that for many of my readers, the idea of Godly Goals might be a foreign concept. Goals are just goals, right?

Well, not so fast. In a recent conversation with a dear friend, she told me that she was in a knitting competition with one of her acquaintances. At first, her competitiveness came roaring alive but for all the wrong reasons. The passive aggressiveness of her competitor got the better of her, and soon she found herself consumed with the thought of winning, just “to show her”.

Normally, my friend finds a lot of peace and joy in knitting. However, the competition quickly turned it into something she was no longer doing for fun. That’s when she had her “come to Jesus” moment.

What makes Goals Godly?

Goals

My friend reassessed her motivation for participating in the knitting competition and refused to let her competitor get in her head anymore. Determined to stay true to herself, she slightly altered her goals to reflect her love for Jesus. Now, she’s reaching those goals with peace, and without overwhelm.

Often, we know when God is calling us to do something. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t get in the way of the beautiful work he is set to do in us. In my friend’s situation, she set out to accomplish something that would have a big impact on others – knitting hats for the homeless. But when she let the snide comments of her co-knitter get to her, her motivation shifted from selflessness to selfishness. The work and mission were no longer enough – she wanted accolades.

Setting Yourself up for Success

You can read all about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals in a previous blog article, here. So, I won’t go over all those points again. But what I will recommend is that you add to that method a moment to reflect on the motivation behind your goals and remind yourself of it often. Don’t let yourself get in the way of what God wants to do in your life.

When I recently followed up with my friend, I asked her if she’s struggled any more with wanting to become overly competitive again. She stated it better than I ever could. “God’s helping me change my bad habits for better ones,” she said. “So, I’ve already won.”
