do you need a reset

WHY EVERYONE NEEDS TO HIT THE RESET BUTTON

I’ve been struggling for the last two weeks to buckle down and get my life organized. I feel like I’ve been busy, busy, busy, but treading more water than swimming laps, if you know what I mean. I’ve been doing a lot of stuff but not getting anything done. I’m going in a million directions and failing to go anywhere at all.

Have you ever felt like that?  Your mind feels cluttered, your house feels messy, you lack direction at work, your spiritual health feels out of balance, and your diet is out of control? I have a feeling it’s not just me.

HOW MINIMALIZING CAN HELP YOU RESET

Cluttered room

Listen, I am not one of those people who will thank an inanimate object for its service to me, then say goodbye to it if it doesn’t spark joy. I like to think that I’m much more practical when it comes to stuff. If it doesn’t serve a purpose, then it doesn’t stay. I would much rather have to re-buy something in 10 years than store it for all that time, hoping someday I’ll use it again.

When you surround yourself with so much stuff, you become a “stuff-manager.” You’ll find yourself spending so much time tidying (or living in clutter) that you don’t have time (or space) to enjoy your home thoroughly. There are a million blogs devoted to decluttering, so I’ll let you check those out if you need specific tips and tricks, but the goal is this: get rid of the stuff that no longer serves you.

RESET AND DECLUTTER YOUR MIND

I’ve heard the analogy that our brains are like a computer browser with dozens of windows open at a time, all vying for bandwidth. If you’re an – ahem – older computer, you understand that all those browser windows make working on the computer slow and inefficient. Our brains are like that, too.

When dozens of thoughts are cluttering your mind, chances are your concentration is less than stellar.

TOOLS TO HELP YOU RESET

Check List, Reset

In today’s world, we all have a lot going on. I find that checklists and alarms on my phone help me organize my thoughts and clear my headspace to concentrate on one thing at a time.

Seriously, you should see the checklist I have going on next to my laptop as I type this article. Whenever a distracting “to-do” thought comes up, I jot it down and get back to typing. This way, I don’t forget things that pop into my brain, and I barely break concentration.

The alarm and timer option on my phone goes off at all times of the day, reminding me to do everything from feeding the dog to picking up groceries. While annoying, I prefer the alarm’s chirp and the “set it and forget it” approach to constantly worrying and reminding myself of every little thing I need to accomplish during the day.

I find it nearly impossible to shut down all the other browser windows in my mind, but at least I’ve developed a system that works to minimize them until a better time.

RESET YOUR HEALTH

Cleanse your body, Reset

Spiritual and physical health are equally important to me. When I fail to make either of them a priority, things spiral in a negative direction relatively quickly. I’ve found that disciplining myself to take quiet time in Scripture and prayer sets me up for a much more relaxing and positive day.

The same goes for my diet. I’m not here to tell you what diet to follow, as we’re all unique individuals and need to find what works best for us individually. I am here to tell you that finding what foods work (and don’t work) for you so is essential. Food sensitivities, digestive problems, and toxicity are so prevalent in today’s society. We should all make an effort to regularly cleanse our bodies and replenish them with good-quality nutrition. When we feel good on the inside, life is so much more enjoyable!

DO YOU NEED A RESET?

We are no good to ourselves or others when we are so busy that we lack time for really meaningful progress and relationships. If any of the points I’ve hit on resonate with you, I encourage you to take some time to organize your thoughts and identify the areas in which you require a reset. Then, take the necessary steps to do so.
