Be Careful What You Listen To

POWER OF WORDS

Don’t worry. This isn’t going to be one of those “Don’t listen to the mainstream media” type posts. (However…oh never mind.) I think this post is going to surprise many readers, but in a good way. Today, I want to open your eyes to the power that not just words, but all sound, has over your health.

BE KIND TO YOUR PLANTS

Houseplant

Have you ever seen the experiment where people give two healthy plants the same food and water, but recordings speak to one plant negatively, while the other hears positive words? If you’re like me, your initial thought would be that words can’t possibly matter to plants. Plants don’t have ears and a brain and can’t hear. However, in the experiment, the “bullied” plant starts to wilt and die while the other plant thrives and grows.

WATER ABSORBS WORDS

Snowflakes

In another similar experiment, Dr. Masaru Emoto demonstrates the power and sound frequency of words. Dr. Emoto took photographs of the frozen water crystals formed under a microscope while he spoke different words over them. When he said words like “love,” “gratitude,” “God,” “truth,” or “peace,” beautiful crystals would form. Each crystal was different and unique, like a snowflake. When he said things like “evil,” “you fool,” and “you disgust me,” strange, disfigured shapes would result.

FREQUENCIES AFFECT HEALTH

Cutting-edge research shows more and more validity to the power that words and sounds in our surroundings have on our overall health. I’m sure when you read the title of this blog, you didn’t think that you were going to get a science lesson. But I love it when some of God’s other creations show actual physical validity to the things we feel deeply (like the hurt we feel from negative words).

Did you know that everything emits a frequency? Whether it’s the glass of your iPad screen, the coffee in your cup, or the tissue of your liver, everything emits a frequency. The exciting part is that science has started to show the ability of music set at precise frequencies to alter or enhance our health. According to these theories, by listening to music set at the frequency of healthy liver tissue, a stressed liver could sync to that frequency and start trending toward health.

IS THIS FOR REAL?

Afternoon Nap

I know this is all sounding a bit sci-fi right now, but I’ve experienced something similar in my own body. A few years ago, I downloaded an app called Binaural Beats. Developers created several programs to help your brainwaves get into specific frequencies. Through a set of headphones, I hear two separate frequencies, one in each ear. The frequencies “meet in the middle” and help my brain adjust to the proper frequency for my desired activity. Some of the options are stress reduction, power nap, creativity boost, and problem-solving.

You may be skeptical – I was. But the proof was in the pudding – er – rather, it was in the 30 minute “power-nap” that had me asleep within two minutes and wide awake about two minutes before the end of the program. The frequencies brought my brain to a deep place of relaxation and sleep within minutes and then got my brain back to wakefulness at the end of the program. No alarm needed. In the past few years, I can’t tell you how many incredible power-naps I’ve had, thanks to this program!

WHAT ABOUT WORDS?

Sweet like honey.

Ok, back to the power of words. We all know that words have power. Proverbs 16:24 (ESV) says, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” Proverbs 15:4 (CEB) tells us, “Wholesome speech is a tree of life, but dishonest talk breaks the spirit.”  I believe that every single word of scripture is intentional. God is telling us that words have the power to give us health or break us. What we hear unintentionally and what we choose to hear is something to take seriously.

Take a moment to reflect on all the vitriol spewed all over the country during the events of 2020. Is there any wonder that we’re in such a sorry state as a country?  Imagine if we intentionally treat people with patience, kindness, and understanding instead of defense, assumptions, and anger. Where could we be at the end of 2021?

LET’S DO BETTER

I’m confident that improving the quality of what you choose to watch, read, listen to, type, and speak will significantly improve all aspects of your life. If nothing else, being mindful of what you’re sending out into the world by way of your words could help you not kill any more house plants.
