Why You Shouldn’t Be Discouraged by a Failed Job Interview

Getting discouraged by a failed job interview is not an uncommon reaction. But there are several reasons why you shouldn’t let a failed job interview get you down.

First, let’s look at some statistics:

  • The average job opening attracts 250 resumes.
  • Only 7-8% of people who apply for a job online actually get a job.
  • The average job search takes five months.
  • Only 2% of applicants are called in for an interview.
  • Surprise! Only one person gets the job.

That’s a lot of resumes for one listing!  If you’re one of the people that did not get the job, don’t be discouraged, you’re in great company! Plenty of applicants were probably qualified– that most likely includes you, too! But you have to keep a positive perspective on things during a job search, or you’ll become very discouraged, very quickly.

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP

Finding a new job takes courage. It is not a venture for the faint of heart or the easily discouraged. Disappointment is ok, and maybe even expected when you don’t make the cut. However, it would be best if you did not let your self-esteem take a hit.

The incredibly wise and resilient Eleanor Roosevelt said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”  Read that again. And again. And keep reading it until you’ve got it memorized. It is a reminder that we are in charge of our self-worth – a reminder that should be embraced and internalized.

Not getting a job you’ve applied for is not a reflection on you. The employer is looking for something – someone – very specific, and you weren’t the one. That’s ok! There are many other opportunities and paths out there. Now let’s move forward!

BRING YOUR A-GAME – KNOW YOUR TRUE VALUE

Now is a great time for self-reflection. We recommend that you review, tweak, and sharpen your interview skills, cover letter, resume, LinkedIn profile, and networking techniques – especially if you’re consistently getting turned down.

Have a friend or trusted colleague review your materials, and maybe sit down for a mock interview. By doing this, not only will you gain valuable feedback, you’ll become more comfortable talking about what makes you great, and you’ll gain confidence.

If you didn’t get hired for a job, perhaps the employer didn’t see your true value. If that’s the case, ask yourself if that is because of one of these two reasons:

  1. You don’t see your true value, so your job hunt materials reflect that.
  2. You do know your true value, but your job hunt materials don’t do you justice.
